Understanding your options

Knee osteoarthritis, explained clearly.

A plain-language look at what knee osteoarthritis is, the options people consider, and how to think about regenerative wellness honestly — without hype.

The condition

What knee osteoarthritis is.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the gradual wearing of the cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones in a joint. In the knee, that cushioning helps the joint glide; as it thins, bones move less smoothly, which can lead to pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced range of motion. It is one of the most common causes of joint pain in adults over 50.

OA develops for many reasons — age, prior injury, genetics, body weight, and repetitive stress among them. It tends to progress slowly, and the experience varies widely from person to person. Understanding your own knee is the first step, and that begins with a licensed provider who can evaluate your history and imaging.

The landscape

Options people consider.

There is a broad range of approaches for knee OA, and they are not mutually exclusive. A licensed provider can help you understand which make sense for your situation.

  • Movement and weight managementPhysical therapy, targeted exercise, and weight reduction are foundational and well supported for many people with knee OA.
  • MedicationsOver-the-counter and prescription anti-inflammatory medications are commonly used to manage symptoms.
  • InjectionsCorticosteroid and hyaluronic-acid injections are established options that some providers use for symptom relief.
  • SurgeryWhen conservative approaches are exhausted, procedures up to joint replacement are considered. Surgery is a significant decision made with an orthopedic specialist.
  • Regenerative wellnessAn area of active scientific study that explores how carefully sourced human tissue products relate to the body’s own repair systems. This is where honest expectations matter most — see below.

Where regenerative wellness fits

What the research does — and doesn’t — show.

Regenerative wellness is one of the most actively studied areas in musculoskeletal medicine. It is also one of the most over-marketed, which is exactly why we walk through it slowly and honestly.

The evidence is not the same across every approach. Some are studied more than others, and the honest position is to tell you where the science is stronger and where it is still early.

An honest read of the evidence

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which is made from a person’s own blood, has the most published clinical research for knee OA — including randomized trials and meta-analyses reporting improvements in pain and function for some people, alongside studies that show no lasting benefit. Results are not uniform.

Human tissue-allograft approaches (such as amniotic- and umbilical-derived products) are earlier in their research. Published studies are limited and preliminary, and the field is being investigated in ongoing clinical trials. They should be understood as an emerging area of study, not as established or proven for knee OA.

No regenerative tissue product is FDA-approved to treat, cure, or prevent osteoarthritis. Published research suggests possibilities that researchers are still studying; it does not establish these products as a proven treatment.

Before you consider anything

Ask good questions first.

Whether you ever work with Renvi or not, a short list of questions protects you in this category — where the tissue comes from, whether there’s a Certificate of Analysis, what the published research actually shows, and whether a licensed physician oversees the clinical side.

The bottom line

Knee osteoarthritis is real, common, and worth understanding before you make any decision. Regenerative wellness is an area of active research — not a cure, and not FDA-approved to treat osteoarthritis.

The right next step is education, then a private conversation with an independently licensed provider who can evaluate your individual situation — ideally alongside your own doctor. The decision always belongs to you and that provider.

Renvi Health is a management services organization. Clinical care, if any, is provided by independently licensed healthcare providers.
